The Turkish steel industry has been in a flux over the last couple of years as a result of the massive changes in the global steel markets and the negotiations on Turkey's membership of the European Union. Re-structuring plans are being discussed by Turkish industry sources and the EU authorities to try to improve the balance between long and flat steel production in the country.

The slowdown in the exports market for long products also reinforced changes in Turkey's traditional steel production profile. Indeed, the coming years are likely to support new investment opportunities. Moreover as a producer with a large overseas presence, there is a need to understand how Turkey fits into both global and regional markets.

SBB is organising this one day event in Istanbul where steel industry strategists will present their views on Turkish steel industry, its future supply  /  demand situation, discuss price for 2011  &  2012, production.

Program Outline

09:30 Welcome Address
09:40 Keynote Session: Global market trends and export markets of Turkey
Several of Turkey's key market players and others will discuss changes in its pattern of exports and to what extent the country is likely to remain the main longs' exporter in the region. Gulf countries with their lower annual consumption figures and increasing domestic production capacities continue to replace imports with local supplies. Turkish producers need now to seek new opportunities globally, as well as to keep their current market share in the Middle East. This initial session of the forum will set the scene for a Turkish steel market in flux.
  • Mr William Myles, Associate Director - Management Consulting, Atkins
  • Mr Veysel Yayan, General Secretary, Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association

11:00 Coffee Break
11:30 Session 2: New investments in Turkey and changing market patterns
Turkish entrepreneurs have put the country among the top ten producers in the world: and with the global market again expanding, they are now adding to their steel making and re-rolling capacities. The investors in new flat products, as well as in new capacities for value added long products are changing the profile of the Turkish steel market. Market players and new investors will discuss these developments, and the growing pressures on suppliers.

  • Mr Cem Üstün, Sales Manager, MMK Atakas Metalurji Sanayi Tic Liman Isletmeciligi A.S
  • Mr Charles De Jager, Counsel od Salans , Salans LLP

12:45 Lunch
14:00 Session 3: Dynamics of local market

Domestic consumption has been an important driver for Turkey's steel industry over the last past year, given the absence of high tonnages and acceptable profit margins in the export markets. In this session local market players will focus on new opportunities and the dynamics and micro-dynamics of the local markets. In particular, they will discuss the automotive, construction and shipbuilding sectors.

  • Mr Alen Bebiroglu, Asistant Manager, Turkish Economy Bank (Teb)
  • Mr Melih Simsek, Head of Board of Aksan Yapi, Aksan Yapi

15:30 Coffee Break
16:00 Panel discussion: Prices in 2011 and 2012
